"Bulldogs" Sometimes referred to as English or British Bulldogs, have a very long history and a colourful background. There are two other breeds of Bulldogs, namely French Bulldogs, which are Mini Bulldogs with bat ears, then there are American Bulldogs which are considerably larger than "Bulldogs". In South Africa, this very popular breed presently ranks as second highest in the registration of all dog breeds. Consequently, there are numerous breeders spread throughout our country, some of whom have or are establishing lucrative export markets. Competition is always good and has lead to the betterment of the breed, resulting in the standard of our dogs being extremely high. On the darker side, exaggerated and unfounded statements of winnings and titles have found their way onto web sites, which matter has been brought to the attention of the requisite authorities and hopefully this damaging advertising will be curtailed. We at Sezer are extremely proud of our record in breeding and showing continually for over 40 years, attaining many all breed/group and specialist BIS wins, with our home bred dogs and bitches. It all started by showing Keeshonden in 1965, thereafter we exhibited our first Bulldog, "Major" in 1968 and later bred him with our bitch Sheba, who came into season in 1969 and these two did what is now considered very difficult, ie. they mated by themselves, where after Sheba self whelped seven lovely pups. We unfortunately lost Sheba the very first night, having taken her to the local vet with suspected bilhary.
With baby milk preparations and bottles and working around the clock, we reared the entire litter, most of which lived between 10 and 13 years, being considered excellent in Bulldog circles. One of these pups, "Rosy", slept in our bed which she enjoyed chewing. When she reached age 8, we decided to look out for the best show/breeding stock then available. We were fortunate to procure two bitch pups from Suca Kennels and our choice, "Dadaz", started what is still considered one of the finest bloodlines in South Africa. Her first litter of five amongst whom was Krystal, all became SA Champions in record time. The stud used was. Roseneath "Rebel", a Goldfields "Dog of the year winner". "Dadaz" progeny is still going strong and is very sought after by breeders and exhibitors alike. Krystal, in her very short show career, was unbeaten in the country's show rings and achieved a Best In Show at the all breeds Western Province Kennel Club in 1987, under specialist UK Judge, Liz Carteledge. This most beautiful show bitch's life ended tragically on whelping day, Christmas 1987, with eight beautiful pups inside.
In 1988 we imported American champion Dingmans Ernesto "Ernie" from Karl Dingman. We later offered "Ernie" as stud to breeders with top quality bitches. Mr H J van der Merwe used "Ernie" extensively, thereby uplifting the standard of his Bulldog's. It was decided, in view of Ernie's type and quality, to mate Ernie with his daughter, which produced an outstanding litter. It should be noted that later in October 1993 I bought the entire Bulldog kenel totaling 41 Bulldogs plus show equipment from Mr H.vd Merwe. Monarch grandson of "Ernie", left his mark and went from one success to another, achieving numerous Best In Shows all breeds, group shows and breed speciality shows. He is best remembered for being the only Bulldog to have ever reached Reserve Best two years in succession, at Goldfields' Prestigious Dogmor Dog of the Year Show. Monarch passed away at the tender age of six and a half years in our bed, after a severe heart attack on the night of 19 December 1998.
Monarch has gone down in history as the finest and most popular all round Bulldog ever seen on the South African show scene. Other breeders and kennels have named dogs after our "Monarch" and we are very proud of having owned and shown such an outstanding specimen. Other outstanding dogs and bitches bred and shown by us are numerous. To mention but a few: Our bitch "Nickle" out of Dadaz's progeny, came up against very fierce competition from males, whom she enjoyed beating. She chalked up numerous wins including B.O.B. and groups. She presented us with high-quality pups and has left her mark as her progeny are acknowledged as being amongst the top winning dogs up until now.
In recent years, our bitch, "Go for Roses" outshone many males for B.O.B. and also earned a Best in Show. Presently we are showing pups such as Smasher, already a group winner and Beauty his sister, placed second in the group. We have other excellent young prospects in our kennels, thus ensuring a continuity of successes in the show ring.
In our kennels, besides
an array of puppies, you will find many pensioners, between the ages of
6 to 13 years, happily exercising, socialising and snoozing into their
golden years. We intend to inform you, the viewer, of further noteworthy
Bulldoggy developments on this site which has been updated 24/02/05. |
